Yes, I'm doing two today, because I failed and missed a day a while ago.  And because I love this one.

At first, I thought this was going to be an impossibly difficult one to do, because how in the world is someone expected to pick a single scene from their entire television-watching career and chose that as their favorite?  Then i thought about it, made a list of the top five, and realized there was only one that I really wanted to write about here that I'm not going to write about for any other category.  I think that establishes it as my favorite pretty firmly.  The scene?  Topher's breakdown from Dollhouse, "Epitaph One."

Let's take a moment to just absolutely appreciate every single Topher scene in both Epitaph episodes.  Actually, let's take a moment to appreciate every single Topher scene, but in particular the ones in the Epitaphs.  Through all of the first season, I kinda had mixed feelings about the show.  I didn't dislike it, but I didn't love it as much as I wanted to.  Then this scene came around and my mind was completely changed.

If you didn't want to hug him in this scene, you have no soul.

I adore Topher.  Like, "would gladly bear his children" adore.  So, I'm a little biased towards any scene he's in.  Still, I'd like to know one person who doesn't think that this scene was among the best.  Both Fran Kranz and Olivia Williams are amazing in every scene they are in, but both of them, especially Fran, absolutely kill here.  Since most of Dollhouse is strongly character-driven, it would make sense to latch on to the pivotal scenes of your favorite characters and recognize those as the best - this scene is that for Topher. Two quotes in particular ("I know what I know" and "If I think I can figure things out, is it curiosity or arrogance?" ) really set the themes for his character, and if you remember them, you'll recognize them continuously coming back.

The importance of this scene aside, what really makes me love it is how absolutely beautiful it is.  It's heartbreaking to see him like that, and though it is a radical change from the Topher we know, you can still recognize where he is coming from and how he got that way.  His interactions with Adelle were perfect.  I had always loved the almost motherly affection Adelle had for him, and here you can really see how far that's gone.  These two very difficult to understand and relate to characters are fully established as flawed, broken human beings, and it's both sad and beautiful.

Honorable mention goes to, from the same episode, the scene at the end where Mag and Zone find Adelle's office and see the wall with the pictures of everyone who had worked at the Dollhouse.  The "To Remember" wall.  It was a beautiful, bittersweet reminder of what was to come of the place and the people in it.  Emphasis on the "people."  The Dollhouse tended to dehumanize the Dolls, and I thought it was really great and really sad to see that finally they were recognizing them as people.

Basically, what I'm saying is I think that the entire "Epitaph One" was amazing, but those two scenes in particular.  And that one scene in "Epitaph Two" that contained everything I loved about these two scenes - Topher, the To Remember wall, and beautiful, beautiful tragedy - but I don't really like to talk about that scene.  It still feels a little too soon.

This is an easy one.  A very, very easy one.  America, meet Doctor Who:

Why should everyone watch it?  It's smart sci-fi with a heart that's not afraid to take risks, and literally always stays entertaining.  I was a little unsure when I was thinking about starting it, because really, it's a family-friendly sci-fi that's more than a little geeky.  But, you know what?  It's a perfect set-up, and it works in pretty much every way it could possibly work.  You'll laugh a lot, you might just cry, and I'll bet there will be a couple episodes that will totally give you the creeps.  I was able to get my dad addicted to this show, and I was pretty positive that he wouldn't be able to handle it because of the accents, but he's been marathoning a couple of seasons a week since then.

If my dad likes it, everyone will like it.

More ranting about Buffy?  Okay, I guess.  These days should have been a bit more spread out though.  Or maybe I'm just complaining?  Who knows.  Anyways, least favorite...

Season one had several bad episodes.  Watching it, I sometimes wonder how the show got picked up for another season.  Alright, fine... Season one wasn't that bad, but it certainly wasn't as good as all the other seasons.  Although, coming from me, one of the only people in the world who actually appreciated seasons six and seven, I guess you can take that as you will.

So, I think the worst overall episode was "Teacher's Pet."  The premise was a little annoying, I didn't particularly like season one's hornball Xander, and what was the point with showing that some of the eggs still existed at the end?  I have no idea, but I don't really like it.

This is difficult.  There are - no joke here - a LOT of episodes of Buffy.  Really a frickin' lot more than most shows have.  And that's really great until someone asks you to pick one favorite.  I could pick a favorite from each season and it would be a lot of work.  Or a favorite episode featuring each character, and I'd actually be pretty satisfied with that project.  But a single episode....

For honorable mentions, I absolutely adore season two's "Lie To Me" for the mildly heartbreaking quote at the end, and also "Passion" because every single thing about that episode is beautiful and tragic (but especially Angelus's voice-over about passion - wow).  "Becoming Part 1" and "Becoming Part 2" were perfect endings to an excellent season that stand among the best.  Season three had "Bad Girls" which I love because Faith is awesome.  "Doppelgangland" introduces Anya (probably my favorite in the series), and has that epicly hilarious 'Sexy Vampire Willow.'  "Graduation Day Part 1" and "Graduation Day Part 2" are iconic for blowing up the high school, something I always hoped would happen to mine sometime (not to mention, possibly the best season finales in the show).  Season four didn't have as many dazzlers as the previous two seasons, but "Hush" was truly brilliant television and very, very creative and daring.  And then there was "Restless" which breaks the tradition of epic season finales and replaces it with the cheeseman, in probably the lulziest episode in the show.  Season five didn't really do much for me as far as individual episodes go (though the overall story arc was great).  Season six had a lot of great individual episodes, like "Life Serial" (before the geeks go really bad - plus, Andrew is great), "Once More With Feeling" (which really wants me to tell it it's my favorite, because, come on, a musical episode? Golden), and "Seeing Red" (for killing Tara off without any warning - totally a shock to everyone, I'm sure, the first time).  Season seven had "Selfless," another great Anya episode, "Storyteller," another great Andrew episode, and, of course, "Chosen," which, when I was a kid first watching it, made me really mad when I didn't become a slayer.

See?  That was a lot of honorable mentions.  But, in the end, it's got to go to season five's "The Gift."  I'm sure you figured that out when you didn't see it listed above, because anybody who doesn't have that at least in their top five has something seriously wrong in the brain.  Buffy's sacrifice at the end was absolutely beautiful.

Honestly, though I think she's an amazing character, I don't really like Buffy on a personal level.  She's selfish and insensitive and really just kind of a bitch sometimes.  However, I think everyone can admire her resolve to do whatever she needs to do to save the day, and this episode really emphasizes that trait - she's a big damn hero.  I think, in a lot of ways, this show was trying to inspire people to be more like that.  Every character has a lot of problems that they need to get over, and some of them do, some of them don't, and they face the consequences for that.  It shows the best and the worst of humanity, and tells you that you can be whichever side of that you want to be on, and sometimes you have to make sacrifices and live with that.  Here, in order to save the world, Buffy had to make a choice between her life or her sister's, and she chose her's because that's what heroes do.  But first she had to give one of the best speeches on the show:

"Dawn, the hardest thing in this world... is to live in it. Be brave. Live. For me."

This is difficult because when I don't like something, I just don't watch it, and I can't think of a show I specifically hate.  Reality shows are pretty bad.  I suppose you could just pick any reality show and say that's the one I hate, because there isn't a single good thing about any reality show ever.  I feel like that's kind of a cop-out, but I really, seriously don't know what I would say is the show I hate.

I could go with one I wish I liked but just don't though.  This makes me a little sad to say, because I love the premise behind it and I recognize that it is done very well, but I just can't get into Dexter.  Everyone keeps telling me that it's amazing and I'd love it, but I just can't bring myself to care.  I've watched about five episodes, which probably isn't enough to decide whether it's any good or not, but it just hasn't been able to hook me like it should have.  I don't particularly like any of the characters, and I don't care what happens to any of them.  That's the big thing to get me to like a show - the story can be pretty bad, but if the characters are interesting, that's all I need to stay interested.  Unfortunately, Dexter hasn't been able to do that for me.

Also, you get no picture today.  Ha.

This is difficult in the sickest kind of way because I feel unsure if I should go with a tried-and-true classic or one of the many new shows I've been watching that are excellent.  However, I think I'm going to stick with the go-to show that basically raised me to be cynical and sarcastic and much more awesome than I would have been if left to my own devices.

This show truly brings back good memories.  I must have been in middle school the first time I watched it, and since then I've seen the entire seven season series several times over, and I could watch them all again right now and not be bored at all.  I believe I have already covered how I am a Whedon fangirl?  This is his masterpiece.

Considering that I've been a fan of it for the better part of my life, it's aged with me considerably well.  I enjoyed it for the story and the fights, then I enjoyed it for the characters, then for specific characters (I'm not ashamed to admit I had a crush on Xander.  I am slightly ashamed to admit I had a crush on Andrew.), then for how everything all fits together, and now I can watch them again and get what each episode was actually trying to say.  It's one of those very few things that has succeeded in being both deep and highly entertaining.  I even liked the sixth and seventh seasons, which everyone seemed to hate.

Again, stressing the fact that I grew up on this.  I use Buffy-speak in my day to day life and don't even think about it because that's just what I'm used to.  And when I'm old and nostalgic I have no doubt that I will look back on my childhood and remember watching Buffy with my parents and how great that was, and I will probably still enjoy the show. And  I will probably always verbify my nouns Buffy-style.

So, yeah.  Strand me on a desert island, I'll take Buffy with me.  And a TV, because that would be kind of a dick move to just give me the DVDs.

So, I read a script. Like, a real script.

I am a fangirl.  Let's just address that right now.  My appreciation for Joss Whedon's work is pretty much as much as someone could appreciate anybody's body of work without being disturbingly obsessive.  I am a casual fangirl.

So, naturally, when I heard mixed reviews of the script for his new movie, The Cabin in the Woods, I had to get myself a copy.  I've never actually read a script before, so it was pretty exciting that I got my digital fingers on it.  And let me say, as a virgin to script-reading, I do believe I picked a fairly good one to start with.  It was a lot of fun to read.  Shall I discuss?

First off, I don't want to spoil much of anything because that would make me a very bad person and I might feel guilty about it sometime far in the future, and nobody wants that at all.  But, anyways, basic premise, because that won't hurt anybody:  Four college kids go to a remote cabin in (get this) the woods for a weekend.  They are exactly what you would expect out of a horror movie - there's Jules, the dumb blonde, Marty, the stoner, Curt, the jock, Holden the... average guy?  And Dana, the... average girl?  Of course, things are not as they appear for the characters, as a gaggle of shady businessmen are behind the scenes, pulling a few strings, filming the characters, and doing other creepy things you would expect businessmen in a Joss Whedon movie to be doing.  Seriously, show the man a suit and he will show you the face of evil.

Honestly, the characters were a little hit-and-miss.  The businessmen were a lot of fun, and I have little doubt their scenes will be some of the best in the film.  There is a running joke involving mermen that had me laughing out loud at a couple points - not a common reaction from me, ever.  The kids are all given the most development, and in such a way that, once the horror starts horroring, you know who's getting slashed first.  That's one thing that Whedon doesn't shy away from here - he uses horror tropes like he's building a model airplane out of slasher films.  It's a bit parody, a bit straightforward, and will probably be more than a bit bloody on screen.

But, back on the characters, I thought the kids were a little hit-and-miss.  Joss fans (and newcomers, though possibly to a lesser extent) will love Marty.  Imagine every incarnation of his "sarcastic buddy" character type thrown in a blender with obscene amounts of weed.  Bonus points awarded because he is played by Dollhouse alum Fran Kranz.  I truly believe the part was written with him in mind - as I read his lines, I really heard Fran saying them.  I also liked the character of Jules and Dana.  However, I didn't notice that either Curt or Holden had their own unique voices.  A lot of their lines were ones that either could have said.  It's really going to depend on the actors whether those two come out interesting or not.

Storywise, we have a horror movie with various creatures involved that really doesn't give you anything you wouldn't expect if you've seen a minimum of one horror movie before.  I'm not used to reading a script and visualizing it (I'm actually very bad at visualization in general), but I'm pretty confident that there will be some genuine scares and lots of bloody goodness.  Really, the people who go into this movie expecting a good old-fashioned gore-fest will probably walk away mildly content and not even notice that the point of the film seems to be to give the big middle finger to those viewers.

There is a bizarre twist that occupies what will probably be the last 15-20 minutes of the movie.  I sincerely hope you saw some of it coming, but I quite deeply promise you didn't see all of it coming because it's very weird.  It nearly ventures out of horror and into sci-fi here, and occupies the space between, a space Joss is very comfortable with.  If nothing else, it's genre savvy.

Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, other than it's weird and it looks really bad in my mind.  If done well (and I mean really, really well) I still predict that only about half of the audience will leave the theater liking the movie, regardless of what they thought about the rest of it, just because the ending is such a big wtf.

All in all, I really did enjoy reading the script.  Horror isn't usually my thing, but I enjoyed the whole conspiracy aspect, there was some quality humor (mostly through the first half), and Marty is a truly great character.  On two separate occasions he uses a giant bong for self-defense.  If that's not epic, I don't know what is.  I will probably promote the hell out of this movie when it finally has a release date (IMDB lists it as completed now) even though I know a lot of people won't like it.  It is pretty much destined to be a cult classic and nothing else, but I will do my best to drag my small army along to the theater.

Also, there is a vague reference to "Angry Molesting Trees."  I would very much like to see that happen on screen.

You know, this is probably my least favorite one on here, because I never actually watch new TV.  The only new shows I decided to give a try were Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, and (US) Skins.  And both were kind of bad.  Maybe I'll talk about what made them bad instead?

Suspect Behavior took what made the original Criminal Minds good out (which was interesting characters and the occasional use of profiling - something that it should still have but doesn't).  Now it's pretty much just an average crime show, which isn't really my cup of tea.  What I liked about Criminal Minds wasn't necessarily the storylines (although the particularly twisted murders were lots of fun) but the characters, and Suspect Behavior just can't get me to care about them.  They all seem so hollow.  The Welsh guy is really, really pretty and I might be persuaded to watch the show just to look at him if he weren't so obnoxiously Welsh, but when he opens his mouth I really just wish he wouldn't have.  Welsh accents are very, very unappealing to American ears.

As for Skins...  It really makes me sad that that's the show everyone at my school is obsessed with right now, when the UK version is actually quality television.  I only watched the first episode before I got angry, but basically they took the show exactly, cleaned it up considerably, and made the people uglier.  And I would really, really like to know the reason they felt that they had to replace Maxie with a lesbian (gay guys aren't allowed on American TV?) and make the replacement for Cassie 100% crazier and less likeable than Cassie was.  She was my favorite character, that's just not okay.

So, yeah, I have nothing to recommend from this year.  I might check out Camelot because that definitely looks intriguing, but I don't get Starz so I'll have to acquire it the naughty way.

It just came to my attention that, though it has been so long since I've seen it, I actually have a different show that I loved so much more than Firefly and wish could have lived much, much longer:

I loved this show so darn much it hurts, and now I feel horrible for having forgotten about it.  I am horrible -horrible- at watching shows as they're airing because I always feel like I have something better that I should be doing when its on and I'll watch it later when I can get the DVDs or get it online, but for this should I would actually cancel plans to make sure I could watch it.  I remember it airing on Thursday, which is probably why, to this day, I still have a love affair with Thursday, and it was about an hour after jazz band practice, and if I couldn't get home in time to watch it hell would break loose.  That's how much I loved it.  And now I really want to watch it again...

So, I fail at this already.  I should technically be on day four today, but since I fail so hard, it's just day two.  Maybe it's because I have nobody to harass me when I fail?  Who knows.  Either way, let's do this thing.  I will complete this, even if it takes me a year to.

As far as currently-airing shows go (which is what I assume this is talking about), I sadly don't watch a whole lot of them.  Actually, I can only think of four, possibly five if I ever get caught up with Psych.  Either way, I've got one for you:

Nobody I know watches this show, and that's a darn shame.  It's probably  because it's on HBO and nobody buys that (I don't even, I download the episodes), but still.  It is absolutely hilarious in the worst kind of way.  It's quirky and witty and there is so much pot involved.  Plus, Jason Schwartzman is absolutely adorable and a great actor, Zach Galiwhateverhisnameis is hilarious, and Ted Danson is Ted Danson.  That's an epic win right there.

So, yeah, if you don't watch this show, start now because it's one of the funniest things on television right now.
